Those are the words that Jack Buck shared with John O’Leary in their first meeting. I’ve heard this story several times and it never fails to inspire me – both personally and at HL Group.
MLB.com recently put together a video of the story and John shared it on his blog. This is one of those things that I think everyone should watch.
Their story is such a great reminder of how unexpected, unplanned, unwanted events can change the trajectory of your path – and your success.
As a small business owner, I’m proud of my team’s agility. But what makes us agile is also what can make one of those unexpected/unplanned/unwanted events so very impactful. They can take you down or launch you to the next level. It’s all about how you handle it.
So I look to Jack Buck’s example on how to lead and motivate. I look to John O’Leary’s persistence and determination to overcome his unbelievable obstacles. And I look at the HL Group team I have with me – and how together, we work through the challenge.
In the end, we may not get a baseball signed by Ozzie Smith – or 60+ other major league players. But what we do get is the ability to be a much stronger partner in providing solutions for our clients – and helping them to meet their challenges. Those are the results – and relationships – that inspire our team to continue to innovate and grow every day.
