On January 14, 2020, Microsoft support for Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 (also known as Win Mobile) hit End of Life. Win Mobile is the foundation operating system for the majority of the industrial handhelds that are currently in production use.
But just because Win Mobile reached EOL doesn’t signal an emergency or should it cause organizations to a rush to unnecessary expenses.
Long Life
One of the biggest issues in this situation is that the mobile hardware devices that leverage this operating system (O/S) have been built for ruggedness and durability. That translates into a long life for the device regardless of the O/S. We actually have many customers that have exceeded ten years on these devices. But getting more life out of the devices doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make a plan.
Strategic Migration
HL Group has been migrating our older mobilePLUS clients to the newer mobile device options. Our goal in this process is to complete the migration to newer and better functionality while minimizing cost.
